Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Irritable bowel syndrome is a condition more common in the western world. It is a disorder that affects the digestive system and changes bowel movement without causing a damage or a change to the structural form of the intestines. The change in bowel movement causes a feeling of discomfort in the colon. This syndrome is more common in women than it is in men, since, approximately 75% of IBS patients are women. Symptoms of IBS vary from one person to another and can range from being mild, to severe symptoms that can significantly affect patient’s quality of life.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) does not increase the risk of inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease or cancer.
Causes of IBS:
- Stress, anxiety and depression are considered major causes of irritable bowel syndrome.
- Hormonal changes, especially in women during menstrual cycle.
- Digestion disorders and excessive sensitivity of the intestines.
- A dysfunction of signals. Poorly coordinated signals between the brain and the digestive system.
- Serotonin deficiency in the digestive system.
- Long-term use of certain drugs like antibiotics, antacids, and analgesics.
- Viral infection. The digestive system is sometimes infected with some viruses that he manages to eliminate; however, their side effects can last a bit longer and can affect the colon.
- Lack of benign bacteria in the bowel.

- Do daily exercise especially walking and relaxation exercises such as yoga, meditation and breathing exercises. Sports help reduce stress and improve one’s mood. It also helps maintain proper functioning of the digestive system and proper bowel movement.
- Get an adequate amount of sleep (7-9 hours a day).
- Adhere to a healthy diet and healthy eating habits. Preferably eat small meals at frequent intervals (every 2-3 hours) and chew food well before you swallow.
- Keep your stomach warm.
- Eat foods that have high content of fibers because they help maintain proper defecation process. They also help remove accumulated waste from the body. Preferably eat foods that contain soluble fiber such as whole grains, avocado, coconut, beans, figs, okra, kale, nuts, flax seeds, chia seeds and others.
- Eat foods that contain probiotics because they form a good environment for the existence and proliferation of the benign bacteria in the digestive system. preferably eat artichokes, carrots, garlic, onions, bananas, asparagus, pickles (cucumbers, cabbage, carrots), kefir yogurt.
- Eat food high in omega3 and other essential fatty acids such as raw nuts, walnuts, almonds and seeds especially flaxseeds. Fatty acids prevent inflammations and strengthen the functioning of the nervous system and the immune system.
- Drink adequate amount of water preferably in room temperature (at least 8-10 glasses a day). Water helps with digestion and it detoxifies the body.
- Take a dietary supplement of digestive enzymes before or after every meal to help break up food and facilitate absorption in the digestive system without causing colon disorder.
- Take zinc Picolinate, folic acid and vitamin B-12 on a daily basis because deficiency of these vitamins and minerals causes IBS.

- Drink cumin tea for bloating and gases. Or you can have 1tpsp of freshly ground cumin every day (you can add it to your food). Very important.
- Eat a teaspoon of seed blend (fennel, cumin, and anise) every day before bedtime to get rid of gases and colon disorders. Grind an equal amounts of the previous seeds and mix them together, then have 1tsp of the blend with a glass of water. (Do not dissolve by any means).
- Drink Sage tea (Salvia officinalis) to alleviate colic and abdominal pain.
- Have 1tbsp of Turmeric every day (you can add it to your food).
- Have 1tbsp of ground cinnamon every day. Very important.
- Drink 1 cup of rosemary tea in case of acute diarrhea or abdominal pain. You can have 1tbsp of ground rosemary instead.
- Drink licorice tea or unsweetened licorice juice.
- Drink chamomile, Melissa, light ginger and fenugreek tea because it helps reduce the symptoms of IBS.
- In case of acute constipation, it is recommended that one takes either drenched figs or a mixture of lemon juice and olive oil. You can slice 3 dried figs and drench them for 12 hours in a hot cup of water and then dissolve the infusion with water. You can also mix ½ a cup of olive oil with 1 cup of fresh lemon juice.
IBS patients should abstain from the following:
- Allergenic food such as corn, wheat, milk and dairy, peanuts, preservatives and food dyes because they can aggravate IBS or at times cause its occurrence.
- Preferably limit gluten intake to help curb the symptoms of IBS; therefore, preferably reduce the consumption of wheat, oatmeal, Barley, semolina, and bulgur.
- Simple carbohydrates such as white flour and sugar because the weaken the digestive system and slow down bowel movement.
- Foods that are hard to digest such as fried food, spicy food, red meat (beef and veal), and foods that contain saturated fat.
- Caffeinated drinks, soft drinks and sodas.
- Processed and canned food that contain preservatives, food dyes and flavorings.
- Legumes and foods that may cause bloating and gases like cabbage, onions, and lettuce. You may eat legumes with fresh ground cumin to avoid flatulence.
- Foods sweetened with fructose and sorbitol, because the intestine cannot digest these substances, thus they may cause gases and colic.
- Cold water or cold beverages.
- Halloumi goat cheese (cottage cheese), cocoa with milk, and powdered milk.
- All foods and products that contain seaweed because during digestion marine algae cracks and turns into substances that cause colon ulcers which causes the presence of blood in stool.
- Do not sleep immediately after a meal, but rather wait 1-2 hours before you sleep.
- Tension and stress. It was found that there is a strong connection between IBS and stress. You can take natural mood enhancers such as Verbena herb, gotu kola, ashwagandha, or Siberian ginseng.
- Do not eat quickly and make sure you chew your food well. Also avoid eating or drinking while in standing position.
