Renal Failure

The kidneys have an essential role in blood purification, excreting toxins and waste from the body, producing red blood cells (RBC), and maintenance of fluid balance, minerals, salts, and essential acids.

Renal Failure is a malfunctioning of the kidneys. As a result fluids are not properly filtered thus accumulating waste and toxins in the blood and decreasing urination rate.

There are 3 types of Renal Failure:

  1.  Chronic Renal Failure (CRF)– Renal dysfunction that aggravates gradually and slowly. Chronic renal failure is an irreversible condition that usually leads to final renal failure.
  2.  Acute Renal Failure (ARF)- Renal failure that aggravates in a short period of time (several days to a couple of weeks). Usually after treatment, the kidneys return to normal functioning, but in some cases irreversible damage can occur which may cause chronic kidney failure.
  3.  End Stage Renal Failure (ESRF)- Full functional loss of kidneys that requires dialysis or kidney transplant. Kidney failure causes fluid retention and protein retention in the body. As a result, body systems get damaged and dysfunctional.

The most important sign of Renal Failure is an increase in creatinine level. It is a by-product of creatine phosphate that is generated from muscle metabolism. Approximately 2% of the body’s creatine phosphate is converted to creatinine every day. Creatinine is transported through the bloodstream to the kidneys to be filtered and excreted to the urine.

Women tend to have lower levels of blood creatinine because they have less skeletal muscle tissues than men. Men have approximately 0.6 to 1.2 milligrams/deciliters (mg/dL) of creatinine, whereas women have between 0.5 to 1.1 mg/dL of creatinine.

Creatinine is considered a toxic substance, therefore it should not be present in high levels in the blood.

Creatinine test: Creatinine test is used to check work efficiency of the kidneys. The serum creatinine test measures the level of creatinine in the blood and it helps determine GFR (glomerular filtration rate). In renal disorder and Renal Failure, the kidneys function excrete less creatinine in the urine leading to an elevation in serum creatinine level.

Creatinine Clearance Test measures how much creatinine is cleared out from the body by the kidneys.

Causes of Renal Failure:

  1.  Diabetes.
  2.  Acute Hypertension.
  3.  Chronic use of certain medications such as: Non steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDSs) and immunosuppressive drugs.
  4.  Polycystic Kidneys.
  5.  Malnutrition.
  6.  Inflammations or systemic infection.
  7.  Autoimmune diseases.
  8.  Kidney stones.
  9.  Malformation of the urinary tracts that causes constriction.
  10.  Eating foods high in cholesterol, animal protein and animal fat.
  11.  Some renal diseases such as: glomerulonephritis, kidney failure, renal obstruction and cell death of small kidney tubes.
  12. Low blood flow in the arteries.
  13.  Abnormal muscle breakdown may produce a high amount of creatinine.
  14.  Dehydration caused by diarrhea, vomiting, not drinking enough water, and high body temperature (hyperthermia).
  15.  Doing a hard work without getting rest.
  16.  An inflammation in the body or the urinary system.

The causes to Acute Renal Failure can be determined by the location of the infection:

  1.  Pre-renal: a deficiency in supplying blood to the kidneys, or low blood volume due to disorders such as blood loss, dehydration, obstruction of blood vessels, persistent high fever, acute diarrhea, vomiting, heart failure.
  2.  Intra-renal: infection of the internal parts of the kidney (nephrons or kidneys, kidney tubes, etc.) due to renal failure, inflammation, chronic use of certain medications [like non steroid anti- inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antibiotics, different cancer drugs, immunosuppressive drugs], heavy metal poisoning, use of radioactive material used for radiography, or high levels of uric acid.
  3.  Post-renal: disorders of the lower urinary tracts such as prostate enlargement, tumors that pressure the urinary tracts, permanent catheterization, narrowing of the urinary tract due to stones or malformation.

Symptoms of  Renal Failure:

  1.  High creatinine levels in the blood.
  2.  Hypertension.
  3.  Swelling and Edema (fluid accumulation especially under the eyes and in the limbs).
  4.  Hematuria (the presence of blood in the urine).
  5.  Shortness of breath.
  6.  Appetite loss.
  7.  Fatigue.
  8.  Headache.
  9.  Nausea and vomiting.
  10.  Thirst and dehydration.
  11.  Dry skin.
  12.  Symptoms of other diseases such as dark urine, lack of urine (Oliguria).

Advice and Diet for Patients with Renal Failure:

  1.  Do relaxation exercises such as yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises because it helps reduce stress, tension and depression that most patients with renal failure have.
  2.  Eat a mashed clove of garlic with a spoonful of honey twice a day (morning and evening). If creatinine is too high take two cloves of garlic.
  3.  Eat fresh vegetables such as carrots, cucumber, broccoli, lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower, garlic and cinnamon, and low potassium fruits.
  4.  Drink plenty of water (at least 2 liters a day).
  5. Drink 3 glasses of water (approximately 400ml) first thing in the morning. Preferably wait at least ½ -1 hours before you have your breakfast (for cleansing of the stomach and intestines).

  7.  If the patient suffers from severe depression, we recommend that he takes Verbena officinalis (Verb. product) and Reishi mushroom (M.Reishi product).
  8.  Eat fruits such as: Cranberries, strawberries, cherry, red grapes, and apples.
  9.  Eat foods high in calcium such as sardines, almonds, soy milk, tofu, sesame, salmon, leafy greens, whole grains, spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, legumes, and figs.
  10.  Eat foods high in zinc such as legumes, nuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, whole grains, and wheat germ.
  11.  Drink rosemary tea to reduce fluid retention.
  12.  Consume phyto-protein in small amounts. Preferably eat whole grains, quinoa, buckwheat, black wheat, barley, bulgur, pumpkin seed, sunflower seeds, chia, cowpea, green peas, spinach, mushrooms, artichokes, dried tomatoes, peanuts, peanut butter, almonds, pistachios, cashews, white beans, black beans, lentils, chick peas, soybeans, beans and legumes, nuts, seafood and avocados.
  13.  Eat fresh or cooked asparagus or take asparagus capsules (Aspar product).
  14.  Eat parsley or drink parsley tea if you have acute or chronic urinary tract inflammation.
  15.  Eat foods rich in vitamin C, B2, and A.

Vitamin A: liver, sweet pepper, chili pepper, carrot, green vegetables, walnut, lettuce, dried apricot.

Vitamin B2: nuts, leafy greens, mushroom, organic eggs, fish, soybean.

Vitamin C: chili pepper, sweet pepper, fresh herbs, dark leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, pineapple, mango, watermelon.

Patients with Renal Failure Should Avoid the Following:

  1.  Butter, sweets, bread, tea, caffeinated drinks, energy drinks, fried foods, processed foods and canned foods that contain preservatives, food dyes and flavorings. These types of food weaken the immune system.
